BUHARI PLEDGES TO STEP DOWN AT END OF SECOND TERM
Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari says he will be stepping down when his second term in office ends in 2023.
In a New Year message, Mr Buhari said he would not attempt to exceed the constitutional mandate.
The president said he was determined to help strengthen the electoral process both in Nigeria and across the region, and cited his primary concerns as the security of the nation and the safety of Nigerians.
A BBC correspondent says speculation that Mr Buhari planned to remain in power has been rife in recent days.
ETHIOPIA'S NEW ANTI-TERROR LAW CRITICISED
Opposition and human rights groups have criticised a new Ethiopian anti-terrorism law saying it doesn't go far enough in terms of reform.
The law - passed on Thursday - replaces old legislation which described as terrorism any gathering that disrupted public services.
It now says workers have the right to strike even if they do disrupt public services.
The new law also removes text used to authorise the arrests of dozens of journalists and opposition politicians.
Amnesty International said the legislation still had potential for abuse, but had some pro-human rights elements.
LOSER CHALLENGES GUINEA BISSAU ELECTION RESULT
The losing candidate in Guinea Bissau's presidential run-off poll has filed a Supreme Court challenge against the election result.
Domingos Simoes Pereira said there had been substantial fraud, with votes cast surpassing the number of voters in some areas.
However, African Union observers said the poll was free and fair.
The former Prime Minister and Army General Umaro Cissoko Embalo, who won 54% of the vote, has insisted that he was the rightful winner.
Mr Embalo has presented himself as a unifier of a politically divided country, which has had seven prime ministers in the past five years.
KENYA REVIEWS AIRPORT RULES AFTER STOWAWAY'S DEATH
Kenya has started reviewing its airport access rules, six months after a stowaway fell from a flight over London that was going from Nairobi to Heathrow Airport.
Kenya's Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA), the body that regulates the aviation industry, has proposed new measures to increase the effectiveness of security checks in airports meant to prevent stowaways from boarding aircraft.
The measures will include special passes for airport staff to access restricted areas, which will only be issued after careful vetting.
The draft Kenya Civil Aviation (Security) Regulations have been published for public review. In June 2019, KCAA chief Gilbert Kibe told the BBC that the stowaway whose body fell into a garden in south London most probably had legal access to the airport.
Security agencies have largely remained mum over the case, which they call an "open and active investigation".
Earlier this week the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) warned American carriers of possible attacks when flying over Kenyan airspace,the East African newspaper reported.
The agency said attacks by extremists are likely to target aircrafts flying in areas adjacent to the Somalia border.

EX-GOVERNOR'S NEW YEAR DANCE IRKS NIGERIANS
Nigerians on Twitter have been mocking a former state governor who had gone abroad for medical treatment but was then filmed dancing with a woman during New Year celebrations, according to news site Sahara Reporters.
Peter Ayodele Fayose, who was the governor of the south-west state of Ekiti, had been granted permission by a court in early December to go abroad for treatment.
He is facing charges of alleged misappropriation of funds during his four years in office which ended in October 2018.
Mr Fayose has pleaded not guilty.

But Mr Fayose hit back and defended himself. He said that he was not admitted to hospital:
