The African Union has has issued a letter on 15th November, 2019, to state, why its former Permanent Representative to the United States of America, Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao was kicked out of office after 3 and half years in office.
From the letter issued by the AU, former Permanent Representative to the United States of America, Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao was kicked out of office for misconducting herself while in office.
A number of Africans in the Diaspora were angered by the dismissal of Dr. Chihombori-Quao by the African Union in October this year.
It will be recalled that, in December 2016 Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao was appointed to the position of the AU Permanent Representative to the US. Since then she was able to galvanize the support of African Descent in the US and beyond.
DURING THE MISSION, THE TEAM FOUND EVIDENCE, CORROBORATED BY DR. QUAO THAT THE FORMER PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, DR. ARIKANA CHIHOMBORI-QUAO, HAD INITIATED AND IMPLEMENTED WITH AU FUNDS, ACTIVITIES OF THE FOLLOWING ENTITIES THAT HAVE NO AUC FORMAL APPROVAL OR LEGAL LINK TO THE AFRICAN UNION, NOR ANY OF ITS ORGANS.
However, on several occasions the former was heard criticizing the west for maintaining neo-colonial policies that are meant to keep Africa poor.
Dr Arikana Chihombori-Quao was very outspoken and has become a leading voice for Pan-Africanism, therefore her dismissal came as a shock to many in the diaspora and due to that, many Africans in the diaspora launched a petition to get her reinstated.
There has been several speculated reasoning behind her dismissal but the African Union in a statement said her sacking had nothing to do with her outspokenness.
The African Union said “a high-level team was deployed to the AU Representational Mission to the USA in Washington DC from the 16th to the 26th October 2019 to carry out a supervisory audit of the Office activities.
During the mission, the team found evidence, corroborated by Dr. Quao that the former Permanent Representative to the United States of America, Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, had initiated and implemented with AU funds, activities of the following entities that have no AUC formal approval or legal link to the African Union, nor any of its organs:
AU-ADHI (Africa Union-Africa Diaspora Health Initiative);
African Electoral Integrity Initiative Inc;
Miss African Union Pageant;
African union Trading Company LLC;
Wakanda One Village Project Initiative;
African Diaspora Global Fund;
African Diaspora Federal Credit Union (PADFCU) in the New England;
African Diaspora Youth Leaders Summit;
Pan African Diaspora Women's Association (PADWA)
Pan African Diaspora Men's Association (PADMA)
Pan African Diaspora Youth Association (PADYA) and
African Diaspora Retreat
In the letter, the AU also said the team found that some entities above, initiatives, associations and/or corporates have conducted the following without prior knowledge or consent and against the rules of the African Union.
Utillsed the African Union Logo;
Presented themselves as official AU programmes and/or AU organs;
Used the name of the AU
Registered the official physical address of the AU Mission in Washington DC as their legal and financial domicillium;
Some of these entities are illegally registered to the USA internal Revenue Services with diplomatic tax certificates applied for by Dr. Quao;
Raised or received funds in the name of the AU;
Collected donations from private sector entities and companies like Chevron Oil Company;
Donations and funds were collected in the name of the AU Mission with no evidence that any amount collected were deposited in AU accounts, including but not limited to, the amount of ten thousand dollars donated by Chevron Oil Company. A private entity headed by a certain Melvin Footie, confirmed that they utilized the funds for unknown activities unrelated to the African Union or its Mission in Washington DC.
The AU said “claims made on social media platforms suggesting that Dr. Quao end of tenure is due to any pronouncements or opinions she may have held during her three (3) and a half year tenure, are blatantly untrue and unsubstantiated.”
