AMBASSADOR HOLDS AN EMERGENCY MEETING WITH GCC PRESIDENTS ON CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK

• The Embassy of Ghana to the People’s Republic of China, held an emergency meeting on Thursday, January 30, 2020 with some leaders from the various Ghanaian Community Chapters on the recent pandemic that has claimed over 170 lives in china. The meeting, which took place via the ‘Easy Talk’ app, commenced at 9:00pm local Chinese time and ended at 9:45pm.

• His Excellency Mr. Edward Akwasi Boateng, commenced proceedings at 9:00 pm with his opening remarks, commending the efforts of all Ghanaian Communities in China for holding up strong in such a tragic time.

• He reiterated his firm belief in the Chinese authorities’ ability to curb the current pandemic. He also stated that they are working closely with the foreign affairs ministry in Wenzhou to help if need arises. Again, he added that the president of the republic of Ghana, H.E. Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addo is keenly monitoring the situation and has a number of interventions put in place, which will be swiftly rolled out when need be.

His Excellency Mr. Edward Akwasi Boateng, commenced proceedings at 9:00 pm with his opening remarks, commending the efforts of all Ghanaian Communities in China for holding up strong in such a tragic time.


HOWEVER, HE PLEADED THAT AN EMERGENCY BACKUP PLAN, SUCH AS FOOD SUPPLIES, NOSE MASKS, AND HAND SANITIZERS AMONGST OTHER THINGS MUST BE READIED TO BE SENT TO WENZHOU AND ITS ENVIRONS SHOULD THE SITUATION GET WORSE.

After the opening remarks, Dr. Percy Akuetteh, president of the Wenzhou Chapter of GCC, confirmed there has been 172 cases of the novel pneumonia infection as at Thursday, 30th January 2020 in Wenzhou. He also added that the two biggest tertiary institutions in the city, Wenzhou Medical University and Wenzhou University have all put in a number of protective measures to ensure the safety of students, hence no international student is affected.


According to Dr. Percy, there’s been no reported shortages in food supplies or any protective equipment thus far.


However, he pleaded that an emergency backup plan, such as food supplies, nose masks, and hand sanitizers amongst other things must be readied to be sent to Wenzhou and its environs should the situation get worse.


In addressing the current situation in Wenzhou, H.E. Edward A. Boateng urged citizens in this city to be each other’s keeper and report any problem or signs of ailment similar to symptoms of the novel pneumonia infection immediately to trigger a quick response from the embassy and the local health care centers.


Owing to the numerous false publications circulating on social media and lack of proper communication to media houses back home, Mr. Peter Whajah and Dr. Percy Akuetteh, Nanjing and Wenzhou presidents respectively, were chosen to be spokespersons of the entire Ghana Communities across China to any media outlet that calls on GCC for any official clarification on the state of affairs of Ghanaians in China.


Towards the end of proceedings, the ambassador reassured the Ghanaians back home not to be in panic mode because all Ghanaians in China are in good health, with no recorded cases of the infection.


He however, advised Ghanaian traders who ply their businesses in China to halt travel plans for the time been if possible, to avoid any possibility of catching the infection..


The executive includes, H.E. Edward Akwasi Boateng, the Ambassador of Ghana to the People’s Republic of China, Mr. Abu Osuma, Mr. Hammond (Ghana Embassy officials), Dr. Percy David Papa Akuetteh-President of Wenzhou Chapter, Mr. Peter Whajah-President of Nanjing Chapter and President of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of GCC, Mr. Clement Yaw Effah- President of Zhengzhou Chapter, Mr. Thomas Kojo Eduku- President of Shenzhen Chapter, others are Mr. Gabi -Zhenzhou Chapter Rep and Mr. Sherif-Guangzhou Chapter Secretary.


Yesterday the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) emergency committee declared an international public health emergency over the coronavirus outbreak. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus urged global action to tackle the spread of the deadly virus, which has killed more than 170 people in China.

There have been more than 8,000 confirmed coronavirus cases worldwide, with fears the killer virus may spread to countries with poor health systems.
