CORONAVIRUS: GMA TO GOVERNMENT - DECLARE NATIONWIDE LOCKDOWN NOW

The GMA further called on Ghanaians to support such a move in the national interest to save the nation from the devastating effects of this pandemic should Government adopt it.



The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) yesterday called for a nationwide lockdown with immediate effect.


The GMA said "it has observed with grave concern the increasing trend of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country and the response to the pandemic.


On this day of national prayer and fasting, the GMA called on all Ghanaians to keep the day sacred and intercede for the nation.

According to GMA in a statement, with full conscious of the threat posed by this pandemic, the disturbing trend of community spread and the obvious inadequate capacity of the nation’s health system to deal with the increased numbers of COVID-19 infection especially in the severe to critical cases, call on His Excellency the President of the Republic of Ghana to declare a nationwide lockdown with the exception of essential services with immediate effect


“The lockdown though not a comfortable decision for leadership and citizens alike, [but it] is a proven option backed by science and along with other measures will ultimately be in our best interest.

Ghana has so far recorded 68 confirmed cases of the coronavirus and three (3) deaths.



What should I do to keep my spirit up while in self-quarantine?

Being under quarantine can be frightening. The following should be done to reduce anxiety -- Talk to the other members of the family about the COVID-19. Understanding the disease will reduce anxiety. -- Reassure young children using age-appropriate language. -- Think about how you have coped with difficult situations in the past and reassure yourself that you will cope with this situation too. Remember that quarantine won’t last for long. -- Keep in touch with family members and friends via telephone, email or social media. -- Stock plenty of materials to read to keep your mind occupied. -- Exercise regularly from your quarantine area. -- Ensure that you drink at least 8 glasses of water every day to keep hydrated. -- Eat all your meals in a timely manner.
