EX-PRESIDENT RAWLINGS TO BE BURIED ON JANUARY 27

• The burial service, scheduled for Wednesday, January 27, will take place at the Independence Square in Accra from 9am to 11am.

• Former President Rawlings died on Thursday, November 12, 2020, at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

The late former president, Jerry John Rawlings

The burial service for the late former president, Jerry John Rawlings will be held on Wednesday, January 27. This is according to a circular from the Ministry of Information and Regional Integration to all Diplomatic Missions, International Organisations and Honorary Consulates accredited to Ghana.

According to the circular dated Friday, January 8, the former President would be laid in state from Sunday, January 24 to Tuesday, January 26 at the Foyer of the Accra International Conference Centre from 9am to 5pm daily.

A mass will later be held on Tuesday, January 26, at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra from 9am to 11am. The burial service, scheduled for Wednesday, January 27, will take place at the Independence Square in Accra from 9am to 11am. Former President Rawlings died on Thursday, November 12, 2020, in Accra while undergoing medical treatment at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.


Mr. Rawlings had in the previous month buried his mother Madam Victoria Agbotui who died at the age of 101.

Rawlings, a former military leader who subsequently became a politician ruled Ghana from 1981 to 2001.


He previously ruled for a brief period in 1979 after leading a military junta.


Rawlings remained a leader of a military junta until 1992 when he then served two terms as the democratically elected President of Ghana.
