GOOGLE AND FACEBOOK ARE EXTENDING WORK-FROM-HOME PLANS UNTIL 2021

Google employees who need to return to offices to carry out their duties will be able to do that in June or July, with added safety measures in place due to coronavirus concerns, but most of the staff will continue working from home.

Most Google employees were told they could work from home through the end of the year as the company, with essential workers returning to offices in June or July

Google and Facebook have told most employees to keep working from home for the rest of the year as part of a response by the tech giants to the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

Chief executive Sundar Pichai told Google staff at an all-hands meeting that its remote work policy will be extended until 2021, the Silicon Valley giant confirmed Friday.

Any return to offices was expected to be incremental and staggered, according to the company.

The news came after reports that Facebook is also letting workers tend to their jobs remotely for the rest of this year.

Facebook also said that most workers could continue to work from home until the end of the year. The company won't reopen its offices to essential workers until early July

Google's CEO Sundar Pichai had previously said that workers would continue to work from home until June 1.

Facebook's updated plan is to re-open offices in early July, but let people work from home if they prefer until 2021, the company told employees in a memo Thursday, according to The Information

The social media giant said that it was still in the process of determining which employees would need to be present in the office.

Both Google and Facebook employees were advised to start working from home in March.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced in April that the company was canceling physical events attended by more than 50 people until June 2021.
