“I DISAGREE WITH THIS SITUATION WHERE A PERSON HAS BEEN CONVICTED AND SENTENCED TO DEATH AND STILL BEING KEPT IN THE PRISON FOR SO LONG.
The Deputy General Secretary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is calling for the execution of condemned prisoners on death row.
To Nana Obiri Boahen, it is worrying for Presidents of the Fourth Republic to refuse to sign death warrants when they are mandated to do so.
“I disagree with this situation where a person has been convicted and sentenced to death and still being kept in the prison for so long. How do you keep a criminal who killed a person and has been sentenced to death? He should be killed too.
“FROM 1993 TILL TODAY, OUR LEADERS ARE BEHAVING AS THOUGH THEY ARE AFRAID AND HAVE REFUSED TO DO WHAT THE LAW SAYS.
“From 1993 till today, our leaders are behaving as though they are afraid and have refused to do what the law says. We need to kill such persons or shoot them, or even electrocute them. We should stop pampering such people because they are criminals,” he told Accra based Neat FM, monitored by Adomonline.com.
Some 180 condemned prisoners are on death row at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison because past presidents have, since 1993, refused to sign their death warrants.
But, lawyer Boahen believes there is brazen impunity in the country, with people committing murder, sometimes in public places and in broad daylight, hence there is the need for the death sentence to check the killings.
