RAWLINGS LEADS GOV’T DELEGATION TO LATE ROBERT MUGABE’S FUNERAL

Government has announced, former President Rawlings will lead its delegation to the funeral of former president of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe.


MUGABE, WHO WAS 95, DIED LAST WEEK WHILE BEING TREATED IN SINGAPORE.

The 95-year-old freedom fighter and first president of Zimbabwe died September 6, in Singapore and is expected to be buried Saturday September 14.


Former President Jerry John Rawlings had eulogised the late Robert Mugabe in a tweet which described the Zimbabwean leader as a man who lived for “the dignity of your fellow black”.


“RIP Comrade Mugabe. You lived for the dignity of your fellow black. Your African pride, dignity and audacity were unassailable.

"Africa has lost a bold and noble Statesman. My condolences to the government and people of Zimbabwe,” the former Ghanaian leader tweeted.


They left Accra on Friday, September 13, 2019 and are expected to be in Harare on Saturday, September 14, 2019 for the final funeral ceremony of the first President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, whose first wife was a Ghanaian, Sally Mugabe.


Mr Mugabe was ousted from power in a military coup in November 2017, ending his three-decade reign.

Zimbabwe’s education secretary Fadzayi Mahere tweeted: “Rest In Peace, Robert Mugabe.”

He was born on 21 February 1924, in what was then Rhodesia.

He was imprisoned for more than a decade without trial after criticizing the government of Rhodesia in 1964.

In 1973, while still in prison, he was chosen as president of the Zimbabwe African National Union (Zanu), of which he was a founding member.
