• CHRAJ filed contempt charges against Freddie Blay claiming he had been evading receipt of a summons seeking his response to allegations that he procured 275 buses for his party through corruption.
National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Freddie Blay has expressed satisfaction with the Accra High Court’s ruling that acquitted and discharged him of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice’s (CHRAJ) contempt charges.
According to Mr. Blay, CHRAJ had failed to personally contacted him since filing those charges against him.
THE COURT DISMISSED THE CASE AGAINST THE NPP NATIONAL CHAIRMAN, SAYING CHRAJ FAILED TO PROVIDE ANY SUBSTANTIAL EVIDENCE OF SERVING MR. BLAY WITH ANY LETTERS OR SUBPOENA ASKING HIM TO APPEAR BEFORE THEM.
He, however, said he was relieved the court did not find him guilty of contempt charges leveled against him.
“In my position as Chairman, lawyer and public figure, no one has gone into the details to find out what happened except to run on speculation and I find that unfortunate. But be as it may, it is good that we passed this stage. There had not been any contempt that I am guilty of. CHRAJ itself has not been in touch with me. They have not come to me and none of their officers have I met personally except coming to court to come and face these charges. And today, the ruling being made, I am not happy about the whole process but of course I am relieved that the court says I am not guilty of any contempt.”
CHRAJ filed contempt charges against Freddie Blay claiming he had been evading receipt of a summons seeking his response to allegations that he procured 275 buses for his party through corruption.
In the motion on notice for the contempt proceeding filed at the court, CHRAJ prayed the court for an order to commit Mr. Blay into prison custody for disobeying its lawful requests.
According to the motion, on July 6, 2018, CHRAJ received a complaint from the Coalition of Social Justice, requesting the Commission to investigate Mr, Blay for corruption in respect of his role in the purchase of 275 buses for the 275 constituencies of the ruling party, the NPP.
After assessing the complaint, the commission concluded that it had the mandate to investigate and, therefore, commenced investigations.
However, the court dismissed the case today [Tuesday] , saying CHRAJ failed to provide any substantial evidence of serving Mr. Blay with any letters or subpoena asking him to appear before them.
The court presided over by Justice George Koomson said unless the officers of CHRAJ were being mischievous, no rational person will act in such a manner.
He further questioned why attempts were not made to serve the NPP chairman at his office at the GNPC.
