The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of the Republic of Ghana, Honorable Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, has said her office has been briefed on the inhumane treatment being meted out to Ghanaians and other African nationals in the Peoples Republic of China with regards to the COVID-19 outbreak.
In recent weeks, reports coming from the African Communities in China, Guangdong Province, has it that Africans are being unfairly targeted and subjected to inhumane treatment by Chinese authorities in the wake of imported COVID-19 cases in the country of which only a handful of such confirmed cases were Africans.
"I regret and highly condemn this act of ill-treatment and racial discrimination", Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey said.
Over the past two days, videos purporting to expose this abuse have been splashed all over social media, with such extreme measures as being kicked out of legally binding contracted apartments and hotels without provocation.
For a little over two weeks now, the rate of domestic infections in mainland China have been on the low or absent in some cities, but imported cases have risen, with Chinese from the diaspora making up majority of such infections,’ the Chinese health ministry reported a week ago.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration also said due to these treatment meted at Ghanaians in China, she has summoned the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Mr. Shi Ting Wang to register her disappointment and call for the Chinese Government to immediately address the situation and bring her officials to order.
The minister also added, a formal communication from the government of Ghana will be issued within the next 24 hours to address the situation at hand.
